STEM Program

What is STEM?  It stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  The ultimate goal of STEM education is to encourage students to take an interest in STEM subjects at an early age.   What separates STEM from the traditional science and math education is the blended learning environment and showing students how the scientific method can be applied to everyday life. It teaches students computational thinking and focuses on the real world applications of problem solving.

Ballet, Tap, and Gymnastics for Children

Our Ballet, Tap & Gymnastics program provides an opportunity for children to develop both physical skills for a healthy lifestyle and personal skills to succeed in school and work, all while laughing and playing with a group of their peers. Parents can stay or leave the YMCA during the program knowing that their children are in a safe and loving environment. Children enjoy a warm atmosphere in which they have the opportunity to function in a structured setting. Activities will include ballet, tap and gymnastics. Stride Running Program for Boys

The J. Smith Young YMCA is excited to be able to offer the STRIDE running program for boys in 3rd-5th grades. Registration is open now and will run March 7 – May 11.

We will hold sessions two times a week. The sessions will run from 4:30-5:30 on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. We will meet at the Y and Grimes Park. Near the end of the program, the participants will run in a 5K race to demonstrate the endurance they have gained. Program fees are $75 for Y members and $95 for non-members.

Boys will develop strength of character by participating in interactive and comfortable discussion groups with our trained coaches. Program participants learn to work with, understand, and encourage each other rather than compete. They will challenge themselves, build self-esteem and have the opportunity talk with each other about the challenges they face each day.

If you are interested in being a volunteer and/or registering your child for this program, please contact Tracy Hensley at tracy@lexingtonymca.com for more information.
